In Media – SPIC MACAY 27th National Convention, NITK, Surathkal : My humble contribution

It has indeed been a honor and privilege to contribute to the cause of the movement of SPIC MACAY, through my passion for Photography. Capturing all performing arts and activities during the convention has been of value in propagating the cause of SPIC MACAY. While the convention was underway, every evening, photographs taken there, flew into the media offices! Even after the convention, there have been many an article, feature and review in media wherein my photographs accompanied.

I am trying to put these things together here… Thanks to Tiwariji and Manoj, NITK student volunteer for media, who were tailgating the media to publish. My sincere thanks to Leela ji and Manjari ji for carrying my photos to accompany their reviews; also kind of them for sending across the links to and copies of the articles.

For my daily reportages that I did from the venue, kindly go to SREENI on SPIC MACAY Stage. You will be able to go through every day reportage by choosing the respective day of the convention, from the series of articles there.

The Times of India – Mangalore and Bangalore

Though Times of India published a longish column with two of my photographs, I wish I had written the column too… Look at the headlines “Musical Extravaganza” and “Six Music groups enthralled”, while we had six of the most prominent and celebrated exponents of the Indian Classical forms of the nation performing! It is insensitive, ignorant and of course hilarious for those who are serious about the purpose and the vision! In the era of paid reportage, this is the standards so called ‘national newspaper’ dishes out!

Yet, we all should be happy that the news appeared in one of the most followed ‘colorful’ newspapers… It is another story to figure out how many read this article in this ‘colorful’ daily!

The Deccan herald covered reasonably well about the convention, still if you go through the text, you feel, as a participant you would have produced a much better reportage. Scribes do only superficial work. Rush to the venue, catch hold a few and ask some random questions and make a ‘pulao’ of it in half-an-hour! After all they all are doing their ‘job’! Why do not the newspapers really ask the participants to write about?

Even after mentioning clearly in the text that went along with the photographs, about the details there in, they publish in a way that can add ‘sensation’! In India Express, instead of “Students (from Pakistan and India) of Guru Dhananjayans performing Bharatanatyam during the intensive presentations” it appears “Pakistani artists performing Bharatanatyam during ……”.

And the article in Indian Express should have spoken about Gandhi Smriti that facilitated charkha spinning!

The seven days of convention demands a lot out of each of the participant, and for a few it is 24 X 7. While the schedule starts early morning at 4am and ends at 11pm, life around each of these convention is very enabling to a young body and mind. All the action to facilitate the execution of the programmes smoothely has been captured by SREENI

Final – Day 6 and Overnight : SPIC MACAY – 27th National Convention, 2012 @ NITK Surathkal, Karnataka

The fitting finale has one of the best Vocalists I have ever heard, Pt. Venkatesh Kumar, rendering JAGO Mohan Pyare. He is the answer to our prayers. He is in the finest mold of Pt. Bhimjesh Joshi, Pt. Kumara Gandharva, Pt. Mallikarjuna Mansur… and shares the schooling from Dharwad. I do no have any doubt about this nursery of Hindustani classical music with every home and street having tens of such talents!

Kindly await for that interesting posting…

Day 5 : SPIC MACAY – 27th National Convention, 2012 @ NITK Surathkal, Karnataka

The Guru Shishya duo at its best - Madhavi and Arushi Mudgals
The Guru Shishya duo at its best – Madhavi and Arushi Mudgals

As the day 6 is the D-day for the presentation of the intensives, momentum gathered in all the 29 intensives, practicing and polishing was the norm of the day. On the crafts front, they were heading to creating at least a couple of pieces each to show off on the stage. It was also interesting to see about a dozen youth from Pakistan joining along with their professors from Beacon university for arts, and enjoying dancing in kathakali, bharatanatyam, singing carnatic classical music etc.

It was interesting and coincidental to have the day full of DUOs – Looked like the TWOgether day at the 27th convention :

a. Qawwali by Warshi brothers (Nazeer & Naseer Ahmed Khan Warsi)
b. Odissi by Guru Sishys Duo – Mudgals – Madhavi and Arushi
c. Carnatic Violin by Express Mysore brothers – Shri Mysore Nagaraj and Dr. Manjunath

SREENI on STAGE : SPIC MACAY – 27th National Convention, 2012 @ NIT Suratkal, Karnataka – Day 1

Getting ready for the inaugurals - Bhima, Yakshagana Kichaka Vadha
Getting ready for the inaugurals – Bhima, Yakshagana Kichaka Vadha

The 27th national convention of SPIC MACAY took off at the serene and breezy NIT Suratkal Campus in Coastal Karnataka. It is an annual pilgrimage of dance, music and all art forms for scores of art lovers in India, and abroad… Join me, on this pilgrimage!

The day started with people pouring in from various parts of the country and abroad into this verdant campus of NIT Suratkal, that is like an Oasis next to the Ocean! Though very weary due to the travel (many in the unreserved on Indian railway trains), seeing the old friends they get to meet after a long interregnum created the festive mood. Hugging and cheering, singing and dancing, sharing and caring the camaraderie goes on for the next one week.

Mr. Suresh Goyal, Chairman, ICCR officially inaugurated exhorting youngsters to make use of SPICMACAY and like platforms for their personal growth in every sense.

This series starts with the first day of the 2012 convention –

  1. Welcoming concert – traditional Nadaswaram by Vid. Mambalam Siva (Nadaswaram)
  2. Outstanding traditional folk storytelling of Karnataka YAKSHAGANA by Padmashri Shri Chittani Ramachandra Hegde and troupe
  3. Prof. T N Krishnan (Carnatic Violin) enthralled the young and youthful rasiks with his fabulous renditions
  4. Begum Parween Sultana (Hindustani Vocal) took the gathering to new heights with her enchanting voice and natkat adas.

The performances are lively and invigorating as is the tradition; the stay and accommodation comfortable and inviting, the food sumptuous and filling and the air vibrant with friendship and bonhomie…. I am sure this convention will be remembered for a long time.

As is my vaunt, the compelling desire to tell a story and share is taking shape here in the form of my daily vibrant and spiritual postings. So await every day visual stories from SPIC MACAY Natcon from NIT Suratkal.

Just sit back, browse and enjoy.

Love,

Sreeni
