Thanks Steve for pushing me to stay hungry and stay foolish…

The Steve Job’s Stanford commencement speech has inspired and motivated me. I have used it innumerable number of times to push youngsters to dream big and push themselves to realize their dreams. Stay Hungry Stay foolish…Connect the dots….have become the most used phrases and even inspired people to name their books!!

“Your time is precious, don’t waste it living someone else’s life” will remain the guiding principle for me. I keep telling this to every youngster who is in a dilemma, who is being pushed by parents and the society around with their expectations.

Just to revisit his story….

A boy is born to an unwed graduate.  She places the boy for adoption with a condition that adopting parents have to be graduates, as she believes that will give the child a secure and sure future. But, eventually the parents who adopt the child are not graduates. His biological mother makes his adoptive parents promise to send him to college.

Adoptive parents struggle hard to save to send him to college eighteen years later.  He finds the classes not to his liking. He drops out of the course, yet stays in the dorm with friends, and starts dropping in classes that interest him. He survived by returning coke bottles for his daily meals, and an occasional free meal at Hare Krishna temple.  Created the tastiest APPLE with a friend in a garage! One of the interesting classes that he had attended after dropping out was that of Calligraphy, that went on to influence the design of MAC and Apple. That Apple inspired another youngster, Bill Gates, to use the ideas in Windows!

Apple goes on to become the most innovative company the world has ever seen! But he gets ousted! Then goes on to create NeXT and Pixar, each path-breaking in their own domains. And finds himself back at Apple in a few years, as Apple finds itself at crossroads. Since then Apple has made immense contributions to make the world more exciting place with Steve at the helm.

For the last couple of years, Steve kept everyone guessing. He has been in and out of the news as much for his health as is for the innovative products. He had shared about his struggles with pancreatic cancer in the Stanford speech that he gave a couple of years ago, but also shared that he was cured. Certainly his health has not allowed him to set the pace at Apple and the technology world and he wants to leave it to the best guy at Apple to do that. He has chosen the day.

As a parting shot Steve says, “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.” He leaves the Apple today, leaving Tim Cook at the helm whom he had groomed.

I sincerely wish Steve a healthy life ahead… Thanks Steve for pushing me to stay hungry and stay foolish. Love.
